A Note on Post Office Box Rental Fees

Because the Town does not receive residential mail delivery, the US Postal Service provides every Town resident the opportunity to use a no-fee post office box. Several years ago, the boxes of existing property owners were transitioned to no-fee. For new property owners, a free small-size box is provided upon application and documentation of residence; if a new resident wishes a larger box, they must pay the regular/undiscounted rate for it.

HOWEVER, existing property owners are required to renew their no-fee box ANNUALLY and to confirm their residence in Town. Box owners who fail to do so will lose their existing box and have to apply for one as a “new resident”.

The USPS generally will provide one or more reminders when the annual box renewal is required. To be safe, all no-fee post box owners should be sure to note their renewal date and then provide the USPS with the required documentation in a timely manner, or risk losing their box. Required documentation includes something with your physical address, like a MD driver’s license, utility bill, or bank statement.

… And Note that the MVA Still Won’t Send Mail to Our Post Office Boxes

Several residents have reported problems receiving titles, registrations and the like from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration at their post boxes.  As a result, Mayor Compton asked our State Senator Nancy King to help.  The MVA replied that while it is “going to examine its options for a cost-effective way to alter its mailing process for this particular issue”, Grove residents must, for now, visit the Gaithersburg branch office to print their registration cards and stickers at the self-service kiosk. You can learn more about this issue in the January 2026 Bulletin.
